She/Her · Portland, Oregon

Strategic planning, campaign management, and political consulting have been at the center of Carol McCormack’s professional career for more than three decades. Throughout that time, she has worked with Democratic candidates, elected officials, ballot-measure campaigns, and advocacy organizations across the United States. Her experience covers federal, state, and local politics, giving her a broad understanding of campaign operations and electoral strategy. From her base in Portland, Oregon, she continues to advise political efforts through her consulting work. Carol Butler McCormack is the founder and principal of Carol Butler and Associates. The consulting firm provides strategic services to Democratic candidates, statewide ballot-measure committees, and progressive organizations. Her work includes campaign planning, budget oversight, message development, opposition research, and organizational management. Over the years, she has participated in campaigns ranging from presidential elections to local political initiatives. McCormack’s first exposure to political work came during college when she interned for Texas Congressman Martin Frost in Washington, D.C. The internship offered insight into legislative operations and introduced her to the responsibilities of public service. After completing the program, she remained with Frost’s office in a staff role, where she gained practical experience in congressional affairs and constituent-focused work. Carol entered the national campaign arena in 1988 through Dick Gephardt’s presidential campaign in Iowa. Serving as a surrogate scheduler, she helped organize campaign activities during a critical stage of the election cycle. The position provided valuable experience in campaign coordination and introduced her to the demands of presidential politics. During the years that followed, McCormack worked on political campaigns throughout several states, including Oregon, Michigan, Arkansas, and Texas. Her responsibilities expanded to include field operations, fundraising strategy, campaign management, and overall organizational leadership. One of the most important achievements of her early career came in 2000 when she managed Debbie Stabenow’s successful U.S. Senate campaign. The victory reinforced her standing as an experienced campaign professional capable of directing statewide races. Carol McCormack also developed a long-term connection with Oregon Democratic politics through her work on Senator Ron Wyden’s reelection campaigns. Beginning with his 1998 campaign and continuing through subsequent election cycles, she contributed to efforts supporting Democratic political operations statewide. Her broader experience included participation in Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign as well as involvement in Ron Kirk’s 2002 U.S. Senate campaign in Texas and Bill Halter’s 2010 Senate campaign in Arkansas. In 2006, McCormack established Carol Butler and Associates in Portland. Through the firm, she created a consulting practice focused on helping Democratic candidates and progressive organizations navigate complex campaigns. Her role includes overseeing strategic planning, communications efforts, financial management, and research operations. The firm has provided consulting support for presidential campaigns, congressional races, Senate elections, gubernatorial contests, and statewide ballot measures. Carol became increasingly active in Oregon ballot-measure politics after founding her firm. One of her most recognized projects was serving as campaign manager for the successful effort to defeat Oregon’s Measure 43 in 2006. The campaign involved statewide outreach and coalition-building among organizations focused on privacy and reproductive rights. In 2012, she worked as a senior strategist for Suzanne Bonamici during her special election victory and later campaign efforts. She also participated in the 2014 effort opposing proposals to privatize the Portland Water Bureau. Carol Butler McCormack later joined Nicholas Kristof's 2021 Oregon gubernatorial campaign as a senior consultant and campaign leader. The race attracted national attention due to Kristof’s public profile. Her responsibilities included strategic planning, campaign coordination, and leadership throughout the statewide effort. Outside of campaign consulting, Carol has remained engaged in civic and political activities. Alongside her partner, Win McCormack, she has hosted fundraising events and political gatherings attended by Democratic leaders, including Joe Biden, Jill Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Nancy Pelosi. These events have taken place in Portland and neighboring communities such as Lake Oswego and Dunthorpe. Carol McCormack's professional work has been featured by Oregon Business magazine and referenced by publications including The New Republic, Willamette Week, Portland Tribune, Oregon Public Broadcasting, Crain’s New York Business, and The Fine Print. Beyond politics, she has supported initiatives that encourage women to pursue public office and has contributed to charitable causes, including animal welfare efforts connected to Raskels Rescue in South Carolina. Through a combination of campaign experience, consulting leadership, and public engagement, she has built a career dedicated to supporting Democratic political efforts and civic participation.
