Dr. Thomas Gratzer has built a career that spans over 30 years in psychiatry, focusing on general and forensic practices. He has worked in several well-known hospitals across the Twin Cities of Minnesota, including Regions Hospital, United Hospital, Psych Recovery, and Fairview University Medical Center. Dr. Gratzer managed a busy schedule throughout his career, often seeing up to 100 patients weekly and conducting forensic evaluations. From 1995 to 2002, Dr. Gratzer was a Senior Forensic Psychiatrist at the Minnesota Security Hospital. During this time, he also acted as a consulting psychiatrist for the Minnesota Department of Corrections, providing mental health care to youth at the Juvenile Detention Center from 1999 to 2015. His clinical expertise was further demonstrated in his role as an attending psychiatrist at United Hospital, where he worked from 1995 to 2016, treating patients with severe psychiatric conditions. In 1997, Dr. Gratzer's leadership was recognized when he was appointed medical staff president at the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center. His commitment to education was evident through his role as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School, where he taught from 2002 to 2021. Dr. Gratzer's teaching extended to other institutions like the University of Manitoba and Rush-Presbyterian/St—Luke's Medical Center, where he lectured to psychiatry residents and medical students. Dr. Thomas Gratzer has been a long-standing member of professional organizations like the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. His dedication to forensic psychiatry is further highlighted by his work on various committees, including the Sex Offender Committee, where he focused on the intersection of mental health and the legal system. Dr. Gratzer's background also extends to computer science. In 1991, he won first prize at the Manitoba Science Fair for a computer program and co-authored a book on the TRS-80 computer, which sold 10,000 copies. Additionally, he contributed to developing VP-Info, a programming language for IBM PCs. Dr. Thomas Gratzer has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals, contributing to the advancement of forensic psychiatry. Although retired, he actively supports mental health causes and continues donating to his university's foundation.
