Karen Kuse

An educator, teacher-trainer, and school leader, Karen Kuse brings more than 37 years of experience in Montessori pedagogy and independent schools. She makes her home in Santa Barbara, California, and over nearly four decades she has helped schools navigate growth, transformation, and renewal. On July 1, 2026, Karen Kuse began serving as Interim Head of School at the Montessori Center School in Goleta, California, the latest chapter in a career defined by community building, campus transformation, strategic planning, and faculty development. Karen Kuse's professional preparation is rooted in Montessori certifications in Lower and Upper Elementary education, complemented by a certification in School Management. She earned her Elementary I and II Teaching Certificate from the American Montessori Society through Barry University in 1996. In 2006 she completed her School Management Certification through the American Montessori Society's Center for Montessori Teacher Education in New Rochelle, New York, and in the same year finished the Foundations of Leadership program at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina. Her degrees come from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1994 and a Master of Science in Elementary Education in 1996. Karen Kuse's classroom career opened at St. Christopher's Montessori School in Key Biscayne, Florida. From 1995 to 2000, she launched the school's first lower elementary class and oversaw the design and construction of a permanent building for the elementary program. Karen Kuse is best known for her thirteen-year run as Head of School at the Montessori School of Columbia in Columbia, South Carolina, from 2010 to 2023. In that period she tripled school enrollment and grew a single small building into a four-acre urban campus with seven buildings, negotiating the purchase of eight adjacent properties along the way. Her financial results were notable: a low-interest consolidated mortgage of $500,000 at a 2.95% rate, a surplus of more than $3 million, and a successful petition to the Department of Transportation to have a road donated to the school. During her leadership the Montessori School of Columbia earned dual accreditation with the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and the American Montessori Society (AMS) and launched its first financial aid program. Karen Kuse's path to Columbia included leadership roles in several communities. From 2003 to 2005 she was Founding Head of School at The Montessori Academy at St. John's in Miami Beach, Florida, securing scholarship grants and a $25,000 matching playground grant from City Development Beach Grants while maintaining full enrollment with a robust waiting list. From 2005 to 2006 she served as Interim Head of School at Winston-Salem Montessori in Clemmons, North Carolina, where she oversaw the completion of a $4 million state-of-the-art facility, organized the school's relocation, grew enrollment from 165 to 225 students, and launched a comprehensive marketing and public relations campaign. From 2006 to 2008 she led Palmetto Montessori School of Ridgeway in Ridgeway, South Carolina, eliminating the school's financial deficit to achieve break-even standing and broadening its base of community families to strengthen stability. Most recently, from 2024 to 2026, Karen Kuse was Executive Director and Superintendent of River Valley Charter School in Newburyport, Massachusetts. In that capacity she restored authentic Montessori practices, developed a culture of philanthropy, secured $150,000 in grant income and a $100,000 donation, and designed and built a new playground. Teaching the teachers has been another dimension of Karen Kuse's work. She was an Adjunct Professor and Teacher Trainer at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina, from 2008 to 2015, and at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, from 1997 to 2005. Across both roles she taught graduate-level courses in elementary education, conducted observations and evaluations for teacher interns, and presented workshops on child development and Montessori pedagogy and curricula.
